Bansko Film Fest (25-29 November 2015)

The Bansko Film Fest is an annual event held in late November that is dedicated to mountains and everything that has anything to do with them. This year will be the 15th time that the event takes place and it’s bigger than ever.

For 2015 there will be over 50 films and 9 guest speakers from all over the world. The movies themselves vary in theme from pure mountaineering to extreme skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking. There will also be films dedicated to flying, the trailers of which boggled our minds. With so much to choose from we decided to make our own list of must-see movies. Trust me, if you can’t make it to the film festival, at least check out these trailers.

“Jeff Lowe’s Metanoia”

With over 1000 first ascents Jeff Lowe is considered to be one of the greatest climbers of all time. This documentary of his life follows his untold story from being on the top of the world to the end of the line. This film has won many awards already, including “Best film on mountain culture” at the 2015 New Zealand Mountain Film Festival. This movie sheds light on a different view of life. A definite must-see.

The latest mountain bike movie from TGR and Anthill Films is one of the best I’ve had the privilege of seeing. A combination of great filming, breath-taking scenery and mind blowing mountain biking. This movie will capture the hearts and minds of bikers and non-bikers alike.

Tom Ballard might be young, but he is already making a name for himself in the climbing communities. This movie is a documentary about how to make your dreams come true and the cost of it all. The goal he sets himself is to climb the 6 most iconic north faces in the Alps. Tom will be in Bansko to present the film in person, so it’s not something to miss.

For those of you looking for something more ski orientated we suggest the movie “Antagonist”. Mickael Bimboes and William Cochet are two very different types of skiers. One prefers to ride his local resort in the company of friends, the other prefers the thrill of competition. The main thing they have in common is the will to constantly better themselves. It is thanks to this that they can meet and express their passion for skiing together.

“The Rocky Mountains Traverse”

Just the fact that this movie is produced by Red Bull Media House sets the bar high. Follow Will Gadd and Gavin McClurg, two world class paragliders, as they fly the whole length of the Rocky Mountains in North America. Experience firsthand what it takes to be the first to accomplish this feat and all the amazing scenery they encounter.

Some other titles to check out are:

“American Loneliness” (amazing trailer)
“Citadel Mountain”

Ever since I started skiing at the age of 6, I knew that the mountains were where I wanted to be as much as possible. I enjoy most mostly big mountain skiing during the winter, but am happy just being out of the city.
