One more cold week here in Bansko resort, but we also had sunny days and great snow conditions.
Weather conditions & Forecast & Snow Cover
The whole week was mostly sunny, except Monday, when the weather wasn’t so pleasant. With no sun and temperatures around -18 °C, that was probably the worst day out of the whole week. The rest of the week the weather was changing – mornings were cloudy, but in the afternoons we had clear skies.
Luckily we had light winds and the minus temperatures weren’t as harsh as we expected them to feel. Having the sun to warm us a bit made skiing and snowboarding enjoyable. The whole week the temperatures stayed between -14/-12°C and went up slightly till -10/-9 °C by the weekend.
Snow cover now at the top (2550m) is 160cm and at Banderishka Polyana (1620m) – 90cm. The snow forecast wasn’t correct unfortunately and we had no fresh snow. As the previous week also this week the resort is using the low temperature to make artificial snow.
For the days ahead we expect temperatures to stay below 0°C, but to go a bit warmer. The coldest day for next week is said to be Thursday with -10 °C. Tuesday overnight and Wednesday we expect some snow falls, if the snow forecast doesn’t change.
Runs & Slopes
Not busy slopes and groomed perfectly. The whole mountain is welcoming the skiers and snowboarders with amazing snow conditions that we haven’t had for years. Even the busiest runs number 5 and 10 were quite empty this week and on run number 12 one could enjoy the privilege to ski mostly by itself.
Maybe the low temperatures were one of the reasons the slopes were not so busy, as the restaurants were full at the same time. But because of the low temperatures and the fewer people skiing, the pistes stayed in great condition till the afternoon. Only during the weekend as usual we had more people, but not as many as in the begging of January.
Probably this was the last calm week at the slopes as the resort is getting ready for the mid term break. The first week of February will be the mid term break for the Bulgarian schools and after this we are expecting the English break.
Snow advice
As we have 75 km of ski pistes we recommend you to take a look at the map of the resort before going up, and even to take a pocket map with you, while being in the mountain. The resort has all kinds of slopes for different levels of riders, so choose a slope by the level of your skiing or snowboarding abilities. To help you read the map better, make a point that the runs are marked with colors and numbers, while the chairlifts and drag lifts have names.
With blue color are marked runs suitable for beginners to intermediate. Red slopes required very good skills and good technique. Black ones are only for experts and you should be careful, if choosing to ski there. The two ski roads are marked with orange color.
