Snow Report: December 28th, 2016

It’s time to give you our last snow report for 2016. The conditions here in Bansko haven’t changed much during the last week, but there is a high probability some new slopes will open very soon. Many people will be arriving in Bansko for the New Years holidays, so the resort management is doing everything they can to open more ski runs.

The continuing cold front here in Bansko has allowed for the snow cannons to work non-stop. There are a few slopes which look like they are close to being open. These are the blue N.5 Shiligarnik 1 ski run and the rest of the red N.4 Balkaniada. Other than these two runs, the following slopes remain closed: N.3 and N.11 Plato ski runs; the black N.16 Chalin Valog 1; N.2 Bunderitca; the red part of N.9 Tomba; N.9a Tomba.

Temperatures here are very low, between -5°C and -15°C in the mountain. The forecast is for a little snow to fall the next few days, but no change in temperature. If you’re in the resort the next week, make sure to wear warm clothing while skiing.

Heavy winds affected the top slopes the most.

Wind speeds have been high as well the last few days. Speeds were over 40km/h at times. The good news is that this has not affected the working lifts. Bad news is that these winds blow off some of the snow from the slopes, but to small effect.

Balkaniada

The resort management is working to open the red N.4 Balkaniada ski run.

Lift lines are still small up on the slopes, but will probably be bigger during the next week. Around New Years is one of the busiest times in Bansko and visitors are just starting to arrive for their ski vacations. Down at the gondola, the lift line exits the building, but it passes relatively fast. You can expect to wait 30-40 minutes if you arrive at 9:30 at the gondola. If you get to the gondola before 8:30, you will have a good chance of skipping any waiting altogether. The only lift line on the slopes is at the Kolarski ski lift, but that is no more than 5 minutes long.

No lift lines at Shiligarnika.
