This season just keeps on giving! The week that passed was a gift with 20+ cm of fresh powder followed by clear skies and sunny days.
Weather conditions & Forecast
Amazing snowy week here in Bansko ski resort. Monday started with a great sunny day and temperatures around -10 °C. Then as the forecast predicted Tuesday was the DAY. It started snowing at noon time and by the end of the day we already had 10 to 15 cm of fresh snow. It didn’t stop overnight and we woke up with more than 20 cm of powder the next morning, even in downtown Bansko. A winter fairytale.
As the temperature dropped down we had the coldest day on Thursday. After that the weather slightly warmed up and on Saturday and Sunday we even had 3°C at Shiligarnika. The whole weekend, starting from Friday was amazing. Bluebird skies and great snow.
And there is more to come. The forecast for next week shows heavy snow on Monday and also light snow on Tuesday morning. So get ready. Temperate will drop down again so it looks we will have a great week ahead. Saturday and Sunday though we expect weather warming up again.
Snow Cover & Slope Conditions
February started really generously. At the top (2550m) now the snow cover is 180cm and at Banderishka Polyana (1620m) – 100cm. If the snow forecast stays the same we will be lucky with even more fresh snow next week.
We had a bit from everything this week. Perfectly groomed slopes, deep powder on Wednesday and a bit of moguls late afternoons after the snow fall. Friday and the weekend slopes were great in the morning but quite bumpy late afternoon.
Monday was an amazing sunny day with fabulous pistes and still not busy. Then Tuesday morning it started snowing slightly and by the end of the day the slopes were covered with freshly fallen snow. Wednesday was a gift for the freeriders as the slopes were untouched from the snow machines and one could ski the newly arrived 20 + cm of snow on piste. This wasn’t really pleasant for the rest of the visitors of the resort, because very quickly the slopes became bumpy and a lot of technique was required to ski this kind of terrain.
Friday to Sunday, if you were lucky to reach the resort early in the morning, you could enjoy the morning waffles. As the new snow fell on hard-pack snow, in the afternoons some parts of the slopes become tricky. A good idea is to give your skies in service for sharpening the edges before hitting the slopes.
Snow advice
The resort is now getting busier and it will stay like this till the end of the month, because of the mid-term vacation from school. Slopes are also busier now and you should be careful when riding. Keep in mind the rules on pistes and take care of the one in front of you.
Unfortunately with the resort becoming busier there are also queues at the lifts. Over an hour waiting for the gondola and 3-5 minutes waiting for some of the chairlifts. You can read in our blog some useful tips about how to manage your time so as to enjoy your holiday rather than spend it waiting at the Godnola queue.
COVID regulations
From 1th of February there are new requirement for entering Bulgaria. Anyone, including children aged 12-18, traveling from ‘red zone’ countries, such as the UK, are allowed to enter Bulgaria if they present a COVID vaccination certificate or an evidence of prior COVID infection. You can also enter the country with a negative COVID test – PCR test taken no more than 72 hours or Rapid Antigen Test taken no more than 48 hours before entering the country.
