It was a perfect week here in Bansko. Plenty of new snow, sun and slopes groomed with great deal of care. We just couldn’t have asked for more.
Weather conditions & Forecast & Snow Cover
Epic start of the week with 30cm of fresh powder. Snow was long awaited and we all enjoyed it a lot. Monday and Tuesday were a bit foggy and the visibility wasn’t so good, but then on Wednesday we had this amazing bluebird day with morning powder. Temperatures dropped down significantly compared to the previous week and on Thursday it was quite chilly with -11°C at the top and -7°C at Banderishka Polyana. Friday and Saturday were just what everybody is dreaming of, when it comes to ski vacation, temperatures below 0°C, but not too much, sun and great snow conditions on the slopes. The weather stayed like this until the end of the week and it will probably remain the same next one. We expect clear dry weather with temperatures between 0/-10°C and light winds.
Last snowfall was on 11th of January and next week’s snow forecast shows no new snow till Friday, when we expect new 20 cm. Snow cover now is more than great – at the top we have 160cm and at Banderishka Polyana (1620m) – 90cm. The resort is also using the low temperature to make artificial snow.
Slope Conditions
Pistes were in fantastic condition during the whole week and we also enjoyed a couple of fresh powder days and mornings. Normally slopes are groomed during the night and because it snowed on Tuesday night, Wednesday was one of those powder days, when you are able to enjoy some 20cm of fresh snow on slopes. Great fun for the freeride lovers. Off-piste skiing is indeed forbidden in Pirin national park, where Bansko resort is situated, but if you want to have some fun riding powder, you can try riding under the chairlifts оr next to the slopes.
At Plato (number 3 and number 11), Banderitзa 2 and Balkaniada you can enjoy soft, fresh snow, especially early in the morning when the slopes are still untouched. When no new snow, great for practising your carving technique. Runs number 5 and 10, as well as Kolarski remained the busiest, being great for beginners to intermediate skiers and snowboarders. On the other hand Todorka, Tomba, run number 12 and most of the red slopes are really quiet. Same goes for Chalin Valog, where very few people are skiing.
Currently open slopes and working lifts
All slopes are open, even ski road 2, which starts from the bottom station of Mosta chairlift. On Saturday the chairlift on Plato was out of order, which caused bigger queues for the Todorka chairlift. One more great news is that the Fun Park will open soon. The setup so far includes two small jumps and some rails, but the guys have been working on it very hard since Thursday.
Sunday was World Snow Day. Established in 2012 the idea behind it was to have the world’s biggest snow day, bringing together people all over the world as they hit the slopes to enjoy, experience and explore the wonders, snow and snow-related activities have to offer. As a compliment the resort discounted the daily ski passes for kids aged to 12 years to only 1 lev.
Snow advice
If you can choose when to come, we recommend you to avoid weekends and try to come during the week, as the resort is not so busy at that time, having no queues for the chair and drag lifts. Slopes are also very enjoyable for riding as well as the ski road, which normally is very packed.
Be careful
As temperatures dropped down, the resort is using the opportunity to make artificial snow, but be careful riding next or under the snow canones. Sometimes these areas are quite icy or with hard packed snow and the quick change between different types of surface can cause falling and even bad injuries.
COVID regulations
Covid regulations in the resort remain the same. Wearing masks is obligatory in the gondola and gondola building, also in shops, supermarkets etc. Restaurants and bars are open, but a certificate is required upon entry, although not checked everywhere. More information you can read here.
