It’s time for the last snow report for the month! Yesterday we enjoyed a heavy snowfall. The fresh powder on the top of the mountain is 40 centimeters. The snows cover there s in total around 140 centimeters. The town of Bansko is also all white. After nearly 2 hours of snowing yesterday, we have around 30 centimeters cover in town!
Don’t ski off-piste!
There were heavy snowfalls in the last days and winds throughout the whole week. They carry the snowfalls and make the mountain really dangerous. Avalanche warnings are in force! Unfortunately, on Sunday one of the biggest Bulgarian hopes in freeride skiing died in an avalanche accident in the gutters over Bansko. Personally, I beg all readers of this blog to be cautious and careful. Even avalanche protection equipment is sometimes insufficient, as the mountain is unpredictable.
The new snow is still extremely soft and fluffy. There is no solder to the lower snow mass. This is exactly a prerequisite for avalanches. The snow covers the dwarf mountain pines along with their entire height.
Slopes and lifts
All of the slopes above the bottom gondola station are opened, including black slope Tomba. I would like to remind you that Bansko will host the Men Super-G and GS World Cup on the 27th and 28th of February and the World Junior Alpine Skiing Championship from the 1st until the 10th of March, so the black slopes and a few of the red ones will be closed. Stay tuned with the preparations of the slopes and the resort with our snow report during February!
Last days it was really foggy on top. This is another reason why to choose on-piste skiing instead of off-piste. The next few days will be again very cold so we would recommend you to dress well, -22°C are expected.
Even when all of the ski slopes are being well-groomed, the snowdrifts can make the slopes difficult for beginners. If you are not feeling sure about your abilities, don’t “jump” into red slopes. There are some spots where it’s can be very icy or there can be an unexpected amount of snow.
The snow cannons are producing snow and the maintenance team is doing everything possible to keep the area perfect for skiing, but until the wind stops, we will never have excellent conditions without any remarks.
COVID safety measures
The management of the resort has done a few official announcements in order to remind all guests of the safety measures and their observation.
From the 29th of January, Friday, everyone entering Bulgaria has to present a negative PCR test done 72 hours before arrival. This measure is necessary for the cessation of the spread of the new strain of the virus. The new healthy measures, introduced by the health minister, do not allow restaurants to open on the 1st of February as expected. From the 1st of January, the fitness and malls will be opened in accordance with all rules of the Health Ministry.
In the upcoming days, there will be another article in our blog dedicated especially to the restaurants in the ski area.
