Here we go with the first snow report for the year and for Season 20/21! Even though there are some travel restrictions, the days around Christmas were quite busy in the ski zone. The start of the season looked promising, as there was a lot of snowfall before the official opening! The season in the last few years always started with snow produced from the cannons. But this year it was mixed: artificial and natural snow, that fell in Mid-December.
Snow cover now
The first significant snowfall for the year was last night: around 30 cm of new snow has fallen over 2200 meters in the mountain! At 2550 meters there are 75 centimeters of snow, up to 85 centimeters at some places. At the top gondola station on Banderishka Meadow, there are 35 centimeters of snow and in town, it’s around 5 centimeters.
CAUTION: Avalanche danger!
Experts warn of serious avalanche danger, especially in higher areas! It is forbidden to go outside the slopes and the marked ski areas! More about avalanche danger and keeping yourself safe you can read here and here!
Ski slopes and lifts
At the moment, there are 7 ski lifts operating that will take you to 8 groomed slopes- 3 blues (Kolarski, Shiligarnik 1 and 2) and 5 reds (Banderitsa, Balkaniada, Todorka, Stara pista, Ulen). These runs are enough to handle the skiers and boarders, which are considerably low in numbers as compared to other seasons.
The snow cannons in town were ON for the last few days. If the temperatures don’t go over 0 degrees (as expected), the ski road it’s soon to be open, too!
The rain and the warm weather in the previous days favored the icing of the slopes. Southern winds form gusts on the northern slopes. Winds on top have closed the Plato Ski Run today and a few times last week. Fortunately for more inexperienced skiers, this ice is now covered with enough snow.
Today there was no waiting time at the gondola, but at Banderitsa 1 lift (transition to Todorka and Balkaniada slopes) the waiting time at some point was 15-20 minutes.
COVID Safety measures
Covid-19 safety and protection measures are in force and these are strictly monitored in the common areas. Unfortunately, last week the rule of keeping a safe distance was neglected at the queue for the lifts. I hope will all realize the responsibility we have for the health of others. I believe there will be some even more serious compliance with the measures by the resort management.
Restaurants on the slopes are working as a take-away, i.e. you can take some drinks or food and eat outside. Public restrooms are also open.
Restaurants and bars in town are closed, but they offer to deliver food and even deliver cocktails! Restaurants in hotels are also permitted to work, so they can accommodate you as usual.
The Bulgarian government is determined to keep the ski resorts open and after all these months of lockdown, we hope that by following the necessary rules the season is not going to be interrupted like the previous one.
