Snow Report: January 7th, 2019

0

The New Year has come and gone, but the ski season is still going strong! Since our last Snow Report, almost all of the remaining slopes have opened and we got over 30-40cm of new snow. It’s a good start to the year, but hopefully we’ll get much more snow days soon. If you’re planning on coming to Bansko this next week, make sure to pack warm clothes, as the temperatures have been regularly below -5°C, around -18°C at the top today.

All lifts are up and running, except for the Chalin Valog chairlift, which has been closed since the beginning of this season. The slopes it serves are looking closer and closer to opening, so it shouldn’t be long until it finally starts spinning and we get to ski two of the steepest runs in Bansko. Lift lines are still small up in the mountain, but the queue for the gondola can be 30-60 minutes at peak times. Temperatures are extremely low the last few days, with it being -11°C at noon in the Shiligarnika area and -18°C at the top lift station. Temperatures are not much higher in the town itself, -8°C at around 1 PM. The forecast is for a sunny and cold Tuesday before a snowstorm rolls in on Wednesday night when we’re expecting another 20-30cm of snow.

Slope conditions were extremely good today, thanks to the low temperatures which keep the snow nice and hard. Even at 11-12AM, the slopes were still flat and not choppy like on warmer days at the same time of year. Since our last report, almost all slopes are working and only the ones in the Chalin Valog area are still closed, along with the N.2 Bunderica at the top of the mountain. The N.5 Shiligarnika runs has been open a few days now and the snow cover is more than sufficient, the same goes for the Balkaniada ski run, which is the most visible from the town. Now that almost all of the slopes are open, there are very few crowds up in the ski area, especially when it’s -10°C. Many people just choose to go to a mineral spring rather than ski. If you’re also planning on skipping a day, we have plenty of ideas over on our blog: skibansko.bg/blog.
