Snow Report: March 16th, 2017

0

More snow and cloudy weather over the last week here in Bansko. The snowfall hasn’t been as heavy as previously, but we did get a some smaller snow showers in the mountain most days until Tuesday. The snow cover on the slope is probably the thickest it’s been all winter, making conditions perfect for skiing and snowboarding. As of the 15th of March, lift ticket prices are also down 20%.

With all this snow there have been lots of clouds as well. The top part of the ski area was constantly affected by low visibility all week. Even some of the upper ski lift such as Todorka and the Plato were closed when visibility was below a few meters. All lifts in the resort are currently open and working normally when there is normal visibility. Most of the time the fog and clouds would affect only part of the slopes, so finding a place to ski with good visibility was no problem.

Piste conditions are extremely good in the morning. The slopes are well groomed and allow for very fast skiing. In the afternoon things start getting a little soft and slushy. This is normal given the fact the we’re in the last stage of the winter season and average temperatures are higher. Newly groomed this week is the red top part of the Tomba ski run, which runs under the Banderitza 1 chairlift. This slope hasn’t been groomed all season until now. On the Plato there are no rocks on the slope (as was the case during parts of February), however visibility was bad for the most part of the week.

Some of the best places for intermediate and advanced skiers at the moment are the Tomba and Todorka ski runs. These are red and black runs and are not suitable for inexperienced riders, thus they are less skied and stay nice and groomed for longer. The ski road also get very slushy by the end of the day, especially its lower third. It’s still open, but we will see for how long. It’s no surprise that the ski road doesn’t work until the very end of the season. The Chalin Valog ski area is in good condition in the morning, be get slushier faster than the slopes higher up in the mountain.
