Spring has officially arrived in Bansko, but that doesn’t mean winter is completely gone. We still have a few weeks left to ski and conditions are looking good for some “end of season” fun. Snow cover is sufficient all over the mountain with only the ski road at risk of being closed by the end of March. We’re also expecting more snow in the upper parts of the mountain during the next week.
We’ve had changing conditions over the last 7 days. There have been heavy winds, which kept the top part of the mountain closed, even during the weekend. While today was perfectly sunny with only a slight breeze at the highest part of the mountain. Temperatures down in Bansko itself were around 15°C. The forecast is for sunny conditions until next weekend, when it’s expected to snow in the upper part of the mountain.
Currently all chairlifts and slopes are open, except for the surface lift down at Chalin Valog. The ski runs have sufficient snow cover and the recent snowfalls last week will guarantee good conditions for longer. Most of the slopes are groomed daily, while some are groomed once every few days as to preserve them for longer. But since there are much fewer people in the resort the slopes don’t get too ruined by the time they’re groomed again. The only problem is when it’s too warm and the snow starts to stick in the afternoon. This is mostly felt in the lower parts of the resort and on the Shiligarnika ski runs. On such days getting your skis freshly waxed the night before will go a long way.
Freeride terrain around the resort has a high avalanche risk rating. This is due to the heavy winds which have made conditions a little unpredictable. Sadly, there was a fatal incident a few days ago, where a young local skier got engulfed by an avalanche close to the ski zone. If you’re an expert skier looking for good freeride terrain, it’s a great idea to get a local guide to show you around.
Around town shops restaurants will start closing down over the next few weeks as the season comes to an end. Now is a great time to get a good deal on equipment and other stuff from the many shops in Bansko. Many of the restaurant and cafes have pulled out chairs and tables outside, as the sunny days are coming.
