This is our first snow report for March. The word that probably describes the past week best is SNOW.
Weather & Forecast
It was an incredible one here in Bansko! We had the biggest snow dump so far. Started snowing on Sunday 27th of February and continued through the whole night. On Monday morning the town of Bansko woke up with 20 cm of snow and up the mountain it was more than 50. Luckily it did not stop snowing till early Wednesday. Not much came afterwards, but still by the end of the week we had more than a meter of fresh pow and some amazing time to come on the board and skis. Saturday and Sunday brought another new 50cm, and even downtown Bansko was completely changed by the snow. What a great start of the month!
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were nice, clear and sunny. On Sunday and Saturday it started snowing again and during daytime the visibility wasn’t that good, especially at the top, where the weather closed in completely. The whole week temperatures were below 0°C – around -10°C at the top and -2°C at Chalin Valog.
Forecast
As usual March looks like it’s going to be a great month for skiing. Next week we expect another proper snowfall. Starting this weekend on the 5th and the 6th of March and will continue throughout the whole week. Tuesday and Wednesday will hopefully bring 30cm the least, as expectations are even for more. Temperatures will also drop down even further and at the end of the week they will be around -10°C and -16°C at the top (2600m).
Snow Cover & Slope Conditions
More than a meter! Yes, it is true. We had more than a meter of new snow at the top. These days the snow blanket at Plato (2550m) got up to 240cm and at Banderishka polyana – 150cm. This is the biggest snowfall since the beginning of the season and Bansko was even published into the feed of Snow-Forecast.com facebook page.
What would you say if I were to tell you that we skied and snowboarded in more than 60 cm of finest powder? Deep, deep, deep! And that’s every morning. The whole mountain, from the top till Chalin valog was covered with fresh snow, really an amazing start of the month. Perfect slopes, soft and forgiving snow, as usual better in the mornings and a bit bumpy after noon time, but nevertheless well worth spending quality time on the slopes.
The resort wasn’t that busy at the beginning of the week, but then came the 3rd of March, a National holiday in Bulgaria and with lots of locals also taking the next day Friday off, it became pretty busy in the area. Great conditions and some busy lines was the situation till the end of the week.
CAUTION: Avalanche danger!
Having such amounts of new snow was obviously a major reason for increased avalanche danger all over the Pirin mountain. Risk became higher on all aspects and most elevations. As you are aware, off piste skiing and snowboarding is forbidden in Pirin National park, which a great area of the resort is a part of, and therefore we don’t share information about the avalanche risk. Still if you do intend to spend time outside the designated areas, please do check first the actual avalanche situation and find some more information at Avalanche Bulgaria website or on the facebook page of the organization.
